Ceremony Mick O'Dea 15 March 2007 - 14 April 2007 Kevin Kavanagh is pleased to present Ceremony, an exhibition of new work by Mick O’Dea. Following on from his successful residency and exhibition at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, this show will contain a new series of still lives and a selection of portraits from Paris.
In his previous two exhibitions, Audience (at Kevin Kavanagh in 2004) and Un Salon par Mick O’Dea (at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in 2006), O’Dea completed a series of portraits over an intense four month period. These portraits, often completed within a single sitting, capture as much a moment in time as the personality of the sitter.
In contrast O’Dea’s latest works take on a more contemplative and theatrical quality. Drawing upon the iconography of the ceremonial and the ritual of painting, O’Dea’s still lives are like solitary sets. The objects associated with portrait painting – the table, podium and chair – replace the sitter as subject.
Mick O’Dea is a member of Aosdána and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
A catalogue with an introduction by Helen Carey, and essay by Aidan Dunne, which was published to coincide with Mick O’Dea’s residency and exhibition in Paris, is available. Title: Un Salon par Mick O’Dea ISBN: 978-0-95525-8-7
The exhibition was featured on The View, RTE 1 03 April 2007. Click here to watch the clip. (Viewable with RealPlayer)
