Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh

Kevin Kavanagh is pleased to present Platform, an exhibition of new paintings by Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh.

The title of Ní Mhaonaigh’s latest exhibition links directly to the painting Platform which featured in the 2006 exhibition Eatramh. The title is suggestive of the performative aspect of painting but also alludes to the idea of an in-between place, where a journey begins or ends, or from which we wait. It is from this space that Ní Mhaonaigh’s latest series of paintings emerge.

Present in these new works are echoes of the vague constructions which typified Ní Mhaonaigh’s previous exhibitions - vessels, platforms, mounds, stages. Forms are scored into surfaces which have been scraped back and erased or built up in thick, textured layers. Ní Mhaonaigh places the viewer at the edges and borders of an undefined space - an interval or gap in time - merging the performative with the philosophical.
