Oliver Comerford

I can see your house from here

03 April 2008 - 26 April 2008

Kevin Kavanagh is pleased to present I can see your house from here, an exhibition of new paintings by Oliver Comerford.

The paintings within this exhibition mark a return by Comerford to the large scale format of previous works. Known for his exploration of the landscape, in this latest series of paintings Comerford depicts unnamed places where natural and urban worlds meet. Each painting depicts a building or buildings set within the landscape - remote communities and outposts viewed from a distance against vast expanses of sky and through dense forests.

Comerford’s paintings are derived from a personal archive of photographs, and whilst he does not share the location of his works, the places depicted are real and experienced. The varied and specific mood generated by a certain light, weather, season and time of day is a central element to each painting with scenes that sit within the ambiguous time when day becomes night and night becomes day. Comerford’s paintings convey a quiet romanticism and nostalgia, suggesting a sense of place and experience, of here and now.

Oliver Comerford’s solo shows include Out Here at Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin (2003), Night and Day and Get Here at Kevin Kavanagh Gallery (2002 & 2005), and Talk To Me at The Living Art Museum in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1999. Group shows in which he has participated include Alternative Nature at Cavan County Museum (2008), Tir na nOg at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2005), After the Thaw at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork (2005) and Eurojet Futures, An Anthology of Emerging Art at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2005). Comerford’s work is represented in many collections, both public and private in Ireland and abroad including the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Office of Public Works.
