goldgraber

Ulrich Vogl

27 October 2006 - 25 November 2006

Kevin Kavanagh is pleased to present goldgräber, Ulrich Vogl’s first solo show in Ireland.

Large panes of glass - painted white, silver or black - hang at a distance from the wall. Rays of light fly through space. Fine-lined drawings show a chandelier, an ocean, and dunes or fields. Behind the drawings, a glittering curtain is in wind-driven motion, acting as a mirror in which the viewer is reflected. These are shimmering pictures, of openness and the roaring sea; memories of once held parties, dreams and lonely days at the ocean’s edge.

Ulrich Vogl was born in 1973 in Kaufbeuren, Germany. After two artist’s workshops at the Swabian Arts Summer (“Schwäbischer Kunstsommer”) in 1992 and 1993 with Franz Hitzler and Carsten Nicolai, Vogl began a half-year internship as a set designer at the Konstanz Theater. In 1996 he began studying fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and with Dieter Appelt at the Berlin University of the Arts, receiving his masters in fine arts in 2002. Since 1996 Mr. Vogl’s artworks have been included in various group shows throughout Germany and the US at the Photomuseum Braunschweig, The Gasteig in Munich and the Lab Gallery in New York. He has received awards from the Marween Foundation, the AgriExpoCultura Prize and in 2002 he was awarded the one-year NaFög Scholarship by the City of Berlin. In 2003 he was awarded a one-year scholarship from the DAAD to pursue his masters in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

In 2005, Vogl featured in was du brauchst, at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, an exhibition of five young German artists, which also included Notburga Karl, Klara Hobza, Thomas Trinkil and Steffi Trojan. Click here for further details.

His work can also be seen from 24th October to 2nd December 2006 at Temple Bar Gallery, where he has been invited to show in The Square Root of Drawing - A Study of Drawing within Contemporary Art.

The exhibition was featured on The View, RTE 1 on Tuesday 07 November. Click here to watch the clip. (Viewable with RealPlayer)
